Cutting-Edge Technology from C.A.S.E.
The generous support of C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Science and Entrepreneurship) and the Bradley Family Foundation continues to provide new state-of-the-art equipment and resources that help students find their passions at Shawnigan and prepare them for life after the School.
One prominent addition to the art program at the School this year has been a laser cutter for the Bruce-Lockhart Centre for Creativity, which art teacher Mrs. Rainbow Bartlett says has “revolutionized how students create and engage with art.”
“This cutting-edge piece of equipment has opened a world of possibilities,” she added, “allowing us to explore intricate designs and professional-level craftsmanship.”
One of the first projects with the laser cutter was creating Mexican Day of the Dead masks with Grade 9 students.
“This hands-on experience brought cultural exploration to life, combining traditional art with modern technology,” Mrs. Bartlett elaborated.
For the upcoming School musical, Chicago, students have drawn over photos that they created and used the laser cutter to craft striking visual elements that will be exhibited at the performances. The laser cutter has also been incorporated into monoprinting pieces, which bring precision and innovation to a timeless technique.
“We are beyond excited about this new addition to our art rooms,” Mrs. Bartlett said. “The laser cutter has not only elevated the quality of our projects but has also inspired students to think creatively and embrace new technologies. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a transformative piece of equipment, and we can’t wait to see what amazing creations it will help us bring to life in the future.”
Other additions to the arts equipment inventory at the School over the past year have been a CNC (computer numerical control) machine for the graphic arts department, and a Dana Dolly setup for the film department.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
