SOUL SEEKING FINALISTS FEATURE: SANTIAGO S. & DANIEL W.

Shawnigan students have been working hard all year on their SOUL Seeking inquiry projects. Following two days of science fair-style presentations, 16 finalists were announced, with the top three projects chosen after final presentations were made to a panel of judges. Over the next few weeks, we will feature each of these outstanding finalists. Congratulations to all students on another wonderful year of SOUL Seeking!
It was a case of vanity for two Grade 10 students, Santiago S. and Daniel W., as they realized that they both like to smell good. Having a range of fragrances in their bathroom to choose from, they decided it would be fun to create their own! They started by visiting a local perfumery in Cowichan Bay, getting first-hand knowledge and advice from a perfume specialist, then began researching how they would go about making their own. Once they understood how to do it, they were ready to begin the mixing process.

The first step in the mixing process was selecting essential oils. After finding a local Shawnigan Lake supplier, they picked three oils and got to work. They mixed the oils in a small dark glass bottle and filled it with ethanol and grapeseed oil. It “rested” for three months, and when they opened it, they were pleasantly surprised. It was a great smelling product, getting rave reviews from their peers.

Through the SOUL Seeking process, no topic or idea is off-limits, and for these two, the desire to smell good led them on a unique journey of discovery.
