Announcing the Kingstone Invitational

Shawnigan is excited to announce the inaugural Kingstone Invitational girls’ ice hockey tournament, coming to the School this fall.

The tournament is named in honour of Jo-Anne Kingstone, who worked at Shawnigan from 2004 to 2013 and was the first female Deputy Head in the history of the School. She is remembered with great admiration and respect for her promotion and support of female voice in the student and staff communities, her dedication to delivering a genuine co-educational model at Shawnigan, and for her inspiring leadership.

Jo-Anne’s husband, Jim, also taught at the School from 2004 to 2014, serving as Head of English and Head of University Counselling. Her two children graduated from the Shawnigan, Sarah in 2007 and Ben in 2008.

Shawnigan is introducing this invitational tournament for girls' teams from across North America as part of the development of girls' hockey at Shawnigan. It will complement the Robertson Invitational which was introduced for the boys’ Prep program in January 2018.

“I am thrilled to see this tournament introduced,” Head of School Richard (Larry) Lamont said. “It celebrates the great accomplishments of our female Prep team and our commitment to maintaining and developing an even playing field in our sports programming, something we are always striving to do at Shawnigan.”

Under Head Coach Carly Haggard, Shawnigan’s U18 girls’ Prep team has become one of the top teams in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League, reaching the CSSHL finals in each of the last two years. Forward Morgan J. ’24 played with Team Canada at the last two World Women’s U18 Championships, winning a gold medal in 2023 and bronze in 2024, and has committed to NCAA Div. 1 Northeastern University in Boston for 2024-25. Many of our other players have gone on to play for university programs in Canada and the US.

The inaugural Kingstone Invitational is scheduled for September 19-22, 2024. Shawnigan will be joined by the Pacific Steelers, Vancouver Comets, Ridley College, the Northern Alberta Xtreme, and one more team to be confirmed.
