Film Fest Fulfillment

Roll out the red carpet for Shawnigan film students!

Students in both the curricular and 360 film programs came home from the BC Student Film Festival in Vancouver on May 24 and 25 with a total of three prestigious awards.

Curricular film class students Kenzie G., Charlene K., Owen L., Patricio G. and Adam A. won the award for Best Senior PSA for their impactful film Least Expected.

The 360 group won Best Junior Documentary for their moving film about Mr. Melvin Gómez, who was Artist in Residence at the School last fall, and Ash B. earned the title of Best Junior Director for the same film.

“These achievements highlight the dedication and creativity of our students, and we're immensely proud of their hard work,” said Film Teacher Mr. Aren Goodman. “Special thanks to C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences and Engineering) for providing the tools our students have been learning on, making these successes possible.”

Shawnigan earned one award at the festival in 2023.

Students from schools from across BC attended the two-day festival, which consisted of the film competition as well as a range of workshops for the aspiring filmmakers. The top films were screened during the festival, and the awards were handed out at a gala event.

Vancouver Film School was the official host and workshop sponsor for the festival, while SFU (Simon Fraser University) School for the Contemporary Arts sponsored the awards gala.

Thank you to Vancouver Film School, SFU Woodward’s, and the festival organizers for an unforgettable experience, and to C.A.S.E. for their unwavering support.
