Hospital Foundation Gala

On Saturday, April 20, Shawnigan had the honour of hosting the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation’s annual Champagne Dinner & Auction Gala, bringing members of the foundation and their many supporters to Marion Hall for one of the Cowichan Valley’s premier fundraising events. Shawnigan is proud to be a long-time supporter of the foundation.

Our incredible dining team and many staff and student volunteers helped create a wonderful evening for the foundation and its patrons.

Among the student volunteers was Grade 11 student Desi S., who was helping at the event for her third year in a row.

“The Hospital Gala is a really fun event to be a volunteer for, especially for students on the serving team,” she said. “We had the opportunity to witness the kitchen staff in action, creating incredible (and delicious) meals, as well as the controlled chaos of the auction. As a part of the serving team, my role was to deliver food to tables, refill water glasses, and ensure the dinner service ran smoothly.

“I would definitely suggest that students volunteer for the serving team! It's an exciting night with a fun group of students who care about Shawnigan and the Shawnigan Events Team.”

Grade 12 student Josef J. also volunteered as a server at the Gala.

"This was my second year volunteering and I find it a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and be part of such a large fundraiser for a meaningful cause," he said. "This year I helped to organize the serving volunteers and ran the line of servers, dictating which table to go to, if there were any dietary restrictions, and how many plates should go. I also helped to serve plates myself, and was part of the takedown which runs well into the night, even after I left. It was an incredibly fast-paced volunteer job, but the pressure of it makes it all the more rewarding in the end.

"The event is a culmination of so many wonderful students, staff, and other community organizations that come together to host something special on our very campus, and each year despite prior dedications, Shawnigan students like myself go out of their way to help out."

The Cowichan District Hospital Foundation is a registered charity that raises funds to purchase equipment and support patient and resident care at the Cowichan District Hospital and the Cairnsmore Place long-term care home.

Thank you to our staff and students who helped make the Hospital Gala a success!
