Morgan J. Brings Home Bronze
Grade 12 student Morgan J. returned to the School this week after helping Team Canada bring home a bronze medal from the 2024 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s U18 Championship in Switzerland.
The tournament wrapped up last Sunday, with Canada taking third place thanks to an 8-1 win over Finland in the bronze-medal match. Canada was unbeaten in the preliminary round, outscoring their opponents 29-1 over three games, then defeated Switzerland 6-0 in the quarter-finals before being upset by Czechia 4-2 in the semifinals.
“It was disappointing that we didn’t take home the gold medal, but I am still very proud of our group,” Morgan said. “The overall experience was amazing because of the teammates and Team Canada staff I was surrounded by. I have made many friends and created many memories with them that will last a lifetime. I grew as a player, but most importantly as a person on and off the ice from this experience. Playing with and against the best U18 players in the world was an honour. It has been an unforgettable experience, and I was sad to see it end and say goodbye to all my friends.”
Morgan earned significant ice time in all six games for Canada, and collected nine points on five goals and four assists, the fourth-most points on Team Canada, and ninth-most in the tournament. Her plus/minus rating of +12 was tied for the second-best in the tournament.
“Morgan had an amazing tournament, and we are so proud of her,” Shawnigan U18 Prep girls head coach Carly Haggard said. “She has been the backbone of our team since she arrived at the beginning of Grade 11. Everywhere she goes, she represents the School in an outstanding manner. Morgan has set the bar high for excellence within our team and helped put us on the map. Her work ethic, dedication, and drive are truly admirable, not only with regards to hockey, but her studies as well. She makes people around her want to be better. It has been such a pleasure and honour to coach Morgan for the last year and a half and I am so excited to watch her for the next three months. Shawnigan Lake School has certainly become a better place with Morgan here.”
This was Morgan’s second trip to the World Women’s U18 Championship. She also played for Canada at the 2023 tournament, helping her country to a gold medal.
The captain of Shawnigan’s U18 Prep girls team, Morgan currently sits fourth in scoring in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s Female U18 Prep division with 34 points (17 goals and 17 assists) in 12 games. She is second in the league with 2.83 points per game. Last year, Morgan finished third in league scoring with 58 points (25 goals and 33 assists) in 26 games, helping Shawnigan reach the league championship game. Morgan will be back in uniform for Shawnigan this weekend as her team hits the road for games against the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna.
“We are very proud of Morgan, not just because of her amazing athletic abilities, but equally because of her effort and humility,” Shawnigan Director of Athletics Tim Murdy said. “These two qualities make her an incredible role model for our younger student athletes at the School.”
Morgan is committed to play NCAA Div. 1 hockey for Northeastern University beginning in fall 2024.
