  • Looking back on 2024 – and 100 posts

This post marks not only the end of classes for the 2024 calendar year, but also the 100th entry since we launched A Voice in the Wilderness in October 2023, and we are celebrating with a “top 10” of sorts, with 10 blog posts that stood out in 2024. This list is not meant to represent the 10 “best” or 10 “favourite” posts, but rather a cross-section illustrating the variety of pieces that we have published. Thank you to all the students and staff who have contributed – each and every one of the pieces has helped make the blog what it is. And thank you to all our readers!

If you haven’t looked back at the previous 99 entries, we encourage you to do so!

The results were both varied and insightful as those students gave us a glimpse into what joy means to them.

  • ‘Desks of grass and walls of trees’

Beyond the Gates is a special and integral part of the Shawnigan Journey, taking our Grade 9s off campus to experience other aspects of Vancouver Island, including the region’s rugged wilderness. A key element of the BTG program is the Capstone Expedition to the West Coast of the Island, where students hike the West Coast Trail and kayak the Broken Group Islands. Outdoor Education Coordinator Ms. Jessica Dick wrote this reflection last spring after accompanying one of the groups on the West Coast Trail.

  • Campus Tours 102 - The Class Shadow Experience

A key step in the admissions process at Shawnigan Lake School includes a campus visit. It plays a key role in the decision-making process, as well as in getting to know the School and all it has to offer. It bridges the gap from what you’ve heard and learned about Shawnigan already (from whatever source that might be – word of mouth, admissions fair, participating in events on campus, etc.) to seeing it in real time during the hustle and bustle of an academic day.

We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
