Students got a glimpse at life in outer space on Wednesday, with a visit from a famed Astronaut.
Dr. Robert Thirsk spoke to a packed Hugh Wilkinson Theatre audience about his life before, during, and after space.
The native of New Westminster, BC, outlined his extensive schooling, and touched on some of the attributes and qualifications that allowed him to succeed in space. He also spoke highly of the relationships he developed with his fellow astronauts and cosmonauts, saying that their spirit of international teamwork helped them complete even more scientific research than their Soyuz mission originally mandated.
Referencing a slide show of his own photos from space, Dr. Thirsk also spoke about the nature of life on earth, including the need to protect delicate ecosystems - something he became more aware of when observing deserts and glaciers from above.
Currently the Chancellor of the University of Calgary, Dr. Thirsk stressed the value of a high quality education, telling his captivated audience that his educational background was what allowed him to reach for the stars.
