Gold & Silver at the CSSRA Regatta!

Follow Shawnigan's rowers at Nationals.
Sunday, June 2nd: The Finals - Up at 5:00am, the Jr. Boys lightweight eight competed in their first race at 7:50. Continuing with the 1000m races Saturday, our Junior boys placed third in a very competitive heat and would have qualified for the finals later in the afternoon with the fourth fastest time. As luck would have it, the weather didn't want to cooperate so the races were shut down until a decision to continue was made at 2pm. Unfortunately, the decision went against most of the coaches' wishes and it was decided that the regatta was officially over and the fastest times in the semi-finals would be awarded the medals. This decision was the first time in 68 years that the regatta failed to finish. Shawnigan's results gave us two golds in the Jr. Mens four and eight and two silvers in the Jr. Women's quad and the Senior Girls Quad. This was disappointing for our rowers as they really wanted to compete and not surprisingly, wanted to prove that they were deserving of their medals.

They deserved them absolutely! Shawnigan is very proud of all of the hard work and commitment they brought to the rowing program. Shawnigan rowers are going to be heard from in the years to come and we are all proud of what they have accomplished this past season.

Saturday, June 1st - Rowers had an early start Saturday to finish all of the heats and semi-finals for the finals Sunday. Shawnigan had a good day Friday moving all of its crews to the next round. Things got underway only to be delayed because of rain and wind from 9:30am - 6pm. As a result of the delay, the race officials made the decision to race 1000m rather than the 2000m in order to get all of the races finished. As well, the officials decided that only the top six in the preliminary heats would go through. This decision unfortunately knocked out our Sr. Girls Quad who had the seventh fastest time and would have qualified for the semi-finals. The Junior girls four also didn't make Sunday's draw when they came second in their heat but didn't qualify for the finals.

Friday, May 31st - Competition started today with great success. The Junior Girls Double, featuring Nicole F. and Sophie M. opened up for Shawnigan with a strong win in their heat. This win will move them into the semi-finals tomorrow. Following this victory our Junior Boys 4+, William, Liam, Cody, and Bailey rowed to a convincing win in their heat. Next up were the Sr. Girls Quad. These girls, Annabel, Alex, Georgia, and Sierra hadn't rowed a great deal in this boat but managed to get into the next round despite catching two crabs on the way up the course. They just qualified to move on. Our final race of the day was late in the afternoon with the Sr. Double. Again, a new boat with Annabel and Alex, put together after the Girls Eight dismantled just before St. Catharines barely missed the semi-finals tomorrow.

On Saturday we have 8 races, four Jr. Boys and two each for the Sr. and Jr. Girls crews. It should prove to be another exciting day!

Thursday, May 30th - The team enjoyed an early breakfast prepared by Mr. Mattock and Mr. Hall, and were then off to training and a quick shop at the Regatta Store. Lunch at Ridley was followed by a trip to the famous Niagara Falls.

Wednesday, May 29th - An early breakfast at 7:30 (4:30 SLS time) and then off to the regatta site on Henley Island. Weather was so-so, windy and threatening rain. The kids took the boats off the trailer, rigged them and then off they went for their training for a couple of hours. Coxwains were tested with the current that runs through the course. Turning the rudder sharply, they quickly learned, is a mistake! Everyone was pleased with their training after having gone up and down the course a few times. We had lunch, and then were off to a movie or shopping. Back to Ridley for dinner and then a quiet night, with coaches glued to the hockey game.

Tuesday, May 28th- We left SLS at 4:30 am for the 6:30 direct Westjet flight. It was a smooth, uneventful trip, and we were picked up by Ridley College at the airport. We arrived at  Brock Universty residence around 5pm in a torrential rainfall. John Bomans and some kids rushed off to save the Shawnigan tent from blowing away down at the regatta site! Vans were picked up, and then we headed for dinner at Ridley College where we will dine for the next three days. Kids were impressed by the cafeteria-style dining and the casual dress! Number ones were worn by those under disciplinary conditions. No Wilbur here.
