Groves' House was founded in September 1927 as the third House. It is named after J. James D. Groves, who later rose to the rank of Lt-Col in the British Army. Jim Groves had been Head of School for two years, 1924-1926. Groves' boys originally occupied quarters in the centre of the top floor of the Main Building and in 1969 they moved to one of three new concrete buildings on the hill east of the driveway. The newest Groves' House was built in 2004, located a little further up the hill.

By early 1992, more room was urgently needed for female boarders. As constructing a new residence was not an option, one of the existing boarding houses needed to be used. It was decided that Groves' House would become a House for girls.

Groves' House has had several changes to its House emblem and motto over the years. The first emblem was an evergreen tree flanked by sheaves of wheat; the motto was Labor Ipse Voluptas, meaning "Labour in itself is pleasure.” This emblem was later modified by dividing it into two halves: the lower half contained a green tree and wheat sheaves on a white background; the upper half contained a golden sun on a maroon background; the motto was Sub Sole Sub Umbra, meaning "Flourishing in both sunshine and shade.” There is evidence that this emblem was in use in 1970, but the year of its introduction has not yet been found. Next, the emblem became a rearing stallion. Again, there is no record of when this change was made, although it was in use by 1980. There is no record of a motto at that time. The current emblem and motto were adopted in 1992 when Groves' House was converted to a girls' House.
