Letter from Jacqueline Flett '97 (Groves'), Chair of the Board

Shawnigan Lake School’s 2024 Annual General Meeting was held at the School on Founder’s
Day, Saturday, October 26. The following is an extract of the address delivered at the AGM by
Jacqueline Flett, the Chair of the Board of Governors, shared here with her permission.

Dear Shawnigan Lake Community,

I am happy to address you today and to provide my first AGM report as the Chair of Shawnigan.
There have been exciting developments within our School following another busy and
successful year. We saw many accomplishments, big and small. Shawnigan continues to thrive
thanks to the involvement of all our community who play a crucial role in shaping the future of
the School.

Looking back at the busy and successful year, one of the most significant milestones achieved
was the opening of our new Grade 8 Boarding House. This initiative was part of our long-term
strategic plan (Project Future). Samuel House has created an environment to give Grade 8
students the tools and confidence they need to succeed as they move through the years of their
Shawnigan Journey. Thank you to the many donors who supported this initiative.

Another area of progress has been the development of our draft Indigenous Reconciliation
Action Plan, which has received the support of our Indigenous community: students, alumni,
parents and past parents. This ongoing work is a priority for Shawnigan as we continue to
engage with our diverse stakeholder communities to build stronger relationships and
understanding. It will be a living framework that informs educational practices, campus culture
and community engagement to ensure that Shawnigan remains a place of inclusion, respect,
and forward-thinking leadership. The School will share the latest plan after the November Break.

Finally, our goal is to make the unique experience of a Shawnigan education accessible to as
many talented and motivated students as possible, regardless of their financial background. We
know that diversity enriches the learning environment for everyone, and we are committed to
making it a reality by expanding financial aid options through a growing endowment and legacy
giving.

I am hugely grateful to Larry and the Senior Leadership Team and all staff at Shawnigan for
providing students with unparalleled care and educational excellence. Thank you also for your
unwavering support of Shawnigan, whether through your time, resources or encouragement. I
am very excited about the continued success and growth of the School.
