Shawnigan’s C.A.S.E. program, which has been built through the initiative and vision of The Bradley Family Foundation, has established a dynamic, hands-on learning environment that inspires, trains, and prepares students for careers in applied arts and technology.
Our strategic plan, Project Future, calls for Shawnigan to encourage creativity, inquiry-based learning, independence, initiative and greater sense of autonomy and agency in our students. Central to Shawnigan’s mission is the focus on a well-rounded education, and a passion for the applied arts is deeply embedded in the Shawnigan culture — meaning musicians, filmmakers, and artists are treated with the same respect and support as elite athletes and academics.

Without [C.A.S.E.] I would have never found my love and passion for recording music. The space allows me to work with professional and top of the line equipment that will help me in my future music career. Every time I go to the studio or set up live sound for an event, I learn new skills that I would’ve never thought of previously. As a senior student, I can now pass along my love for the studio to younger students who will hopefully find their passion like I did. – Harry M.
Shawnigan Today operates like a proper newsroom, where students pitch stories, then decide as a team which stories to produce. They go through dry readings before entering the studio, and after they film their segments, a student editor creates a news broadcast out of it, and the results are released every Monday on Shawnigan’s YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook accounts.

Breaking Away for Spring Break
Read MoreStudents fanned out across the globe over Spring Break – many to their homes both near and far, but some on a variety of School-sponsored trips and tours related to their academic, athletic, and artistic pursuits at Shawnigan.EDGE Jamaica TripSeven students and two staff members flew to Jamaica as part of the EDGE (Engagement, Development, Gratitude and Experience) program, where they took part in projects to improve the lives of children there. They first visited the SOS Children’s Village, a sanctuary for children ages six to 17 who have been separated from their parents. The village houses 40 kids in all, six or seven to a house with an “auntie” who oversees them. The Shawnigan students painted one of the houses, including sanding and preparing the building, and spent three days engaging with the kids.

Broadcasting: From Shawnigan to the World
Read MoreBroadcasting at Shawnigan has evolved in leaps and bounds over the last three years, and this is only the beginning.Building on the success of the Chapel livestreaming program, the School has added two more aspects this year under the Broadcasting 360: a weekly newscast — Shawnigan Today — and livestreaming of hockey games.Both projects of the Broadcasting 360 — the newscast and hockey livestreaming — are fully funded by C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences and Entrepreneurship), which supports innovative projects at the School through expertise, time and funding. C.A.S.E. wants students to work with industry-standard equipment, and Broadcasting Instructor Mr. Elliot Logan has been able to build his studios with top-of-the-line material.

Performing Arts Fair: 10 Days of Music and Drama
Read MoreStudents, staff, and members of the Shawnigan Lake community have been treated over the last several days to an abundance of year-end performances from our talented drama and music students.The Performing Arts Festival kicked off on Thursday, June 8 and will run until Saturday, June 17, with presentations from curricular and 360 groups nearly every day, and something for fans of all sorts of music and theatre.The Theatre Company curricular class took the Hugh Wilkinson Theatre stage first, with performances of the plays 7 Stories and Mere Mortals: one showing last Thursday and two more on Friday.

Robotics World Championships
Read MoreShawnigan’s first trip to the VEX Robotics World Championships since 2017 was an eye-opener — in more ways than one.A team of four students — Tye E., Aniela H., Kyan M. and Ben P. — travelled to the 2023 tournament in Dallas, Texas last month, along with three staff members. They were first blown away by the atmosphere at the enormous event, then amazed by the calibre of the competition.“It was definitely a world championship,” said Mr. Paul Doig, science teacher and Head of Digital Innovation and one of the staff members who made the trip. “The kids walked into the arena and were just in awe.”

A Spectacular Start to Robotics Season
Read MoreShawnigan Robotics got the 2022-23 season off to a spectacular start last weekend as hosts and winners of the first tournament of the year.The School played host to 34 robotics teams from six organizations (five individual high schools, as well as a combined group representing the Comox Valley School District). The robots competed in a disc golf-type game called Spin Up, going through a total of 53 qualifying matches to rank the teams. The top 32 teams made the playoffs, then paired up and played through four rounds to determine the champions.
