A Day for Health and Well-Being

A well-being retreat on Sunday, May 26 gave students a preview of what is to come with the Shawnigan Health and Well-Being Centre.

Over the course of the day, students were invited to take part in a variety of sessions related to different aspects of physical and emotional health, many of which are currently offered, or will be offered in the future at the new Health and Well-Being Centre.

“This is one of the first times the building is being used to this degree,” School Counsellor Ms. Jennifer Tully said. “This is exciting and hopeful.”

The biggest success, according to Ms. Tully, was the one-on-one sessions, as many students took advantage of massage and acupuncture opportunities. Also popular was the “rugby and mindset” workshop, which addressed mental aspects of sports such as performance anxiety and building cohesion with teammates. University-bound seniors in particular benefited from a cooking and nutrition class. And the day ended with a sound bath, a mediative experience with a clinician creating resonant sounds that helped the students relax.

Other sessions included mastermind design, yoga, love languages, cold swim and yoga nidra, and enduro-fit boot camp.

The retreat, which represented “a day in the life” of the Health and Well-Being Centre, according to Ms. Tully, ran smoothly, and there are plans to duplicate it next September.
