Rugby Provincials

Three teams set to compete

Three different teams will represent Shawnigan at the 2016 Provincial Rugby Championships.

The School's 1st XV will advance to the first-ever B.C. 'AAAA' championship, after winning the Vancouver Island zone, thanks to a forfeit by Oak Bay High School in the Island final. The game would have only mattered for seeding, anyway, as the North and South Island champs were both set to advance, along with the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley representatives, to the 'AAAA' championship, May 25-28 in Abbotsford.

Shawnigan will enter the tournament as the top seed, setting up a potential rematch against rival St. George's in the May 28 final.

Shawnigan's seniors will be joined, for the first time, by a junior squad at the Provincial championships. Alongside the changes to the senior boys structure, the B.C. School Sports has added a new junior boys championship, giving the Colts a chance to add a Provincial banner to their recent success. The Colts defeated Oak Bay 38-27 in Tuesday's Island final at UVic, earning a berth in the May 27 junior boys B.C. final.

On the girls' side, Shawnigan returns to the Provincial tournament thanks to a 76-0 victory over Brentwood on Saturday in the Vancouver Island final. Captain Holly H. says the girls worked relentlessly in the weeks leading up to the game, "practicing hard and getting into the mindset of wanting to come home with an Island Champions plaque."

Shawnigan's Girls XV heads to Kamloops for the Girls 'AA' Provincial Championship, May 26-28.
