Girls win BC Championship

Girls XV victorious in Kamloops

Shawnigan's Girls XV has capped a historic season with the School's first girls Provincial Championship in 19 years.

After a convincing win over Brentwood in the Island final, Shawnigan entered this year's BC Championship as the top seed.

Playing in rainy conditions in Kamloops, the girls opened the Provincial tournament with a comprehensive win over Houston. Shawnigan then defeated a much-improved Brentwood side (64-17) in Friday's semifinal to advance to the championship game.

Facing last year's runners-up, Shawnigan got an MVP performance from Emily V. in Saturday's 34-7 victory over Abbotsford Senior Secondary to clinch the title.

"I'm really proud of how well the girls worked as a team," says co-coach Laura Russell. Coach Russell singled out the back three of Clarisse O., Enyo E. and Linnea H. for their superb play, but also raved about the play of her entire group, including the substitutes.

Shawnigan also won the girls CAIS championship in April. The victory for the Girls XV came a day after the Colts' BC Championship and coincided with the 1st XV's 'AAAA' triumph in Abbotsford, giving the School a trio of Provincial titles on the same weekend.
